Mass tourism
- Happens in tourist hotspots where in the visitor numbers are negatively impacting the residents quality of life, and their ability to live in that area. (Visitor use and density is too much)
- Example:
Bali - Case study of mass tourism
- Bali at first was popular for cultural tourism, and that was fine. But now bali is facing mass tourism, which is bad.
Negative impacts of mass tourism
Mass tourism means that there is a large number of tourists which impact
- Quality of life for the residents
- Environment
- Trampling
- Littering
- Habitat degradation due to excessive tourists
- Land degradation
- More need for natural resources increases extraction
- More land will be built on for hotels and creation of tourist accommodations and hotspots
- Example: Forests
- Increase in water consumption
- Hotels are absorbing so much water that bali might face a drinking water crisis
- Water degradation
- Example: Golf tourism
- Loss of land
- Hotels and roads (natural land is being converted into hotels to accomodate for the increased population of tourists)
- Increase in waste generated
- Increased traffic jams
- Depletion of natural resources
- More demand for fuel, and other natural resources.
- Pollution
- Noise
- More people
- Noise pollution hurts animals. Animal safaris and zoos cause stress to animals.
- Air
- Transport and more emissions (air travel is major cause - aeroplanes)
- Can causes severe local pollution
- Global warming, climate change and all the negative impacts that they bring w it
- Water
- Sewage
- Chemicals in ocean
- Solid waste disposal - littering
- Hurts the natural look and beauty of the place
- People litter on their trekking tracks
- Camping equipment
- Oxygen tanks
- Yada Yada Yada
- Aesthetic
- Often tourism fails to incorporate their structures with the natural landscape and features of the given area
- Large dominating features like
- Can look outta place with the natural landscape of the area
- Sewage - sewage runoff - contamination of land and water - eutrophication - algae bloom - loss of biodiversity of aquatic species. Can also cause biomagnification - humans who eat animals get sick
Physical impacts of tourism

- Fragile and attractive ecosystems face the most threats of tourism
- Coral reefs (ex: great barrier reef)
- Rainforest
